This land is barren now silent,
Stiller than death itself

The earth once trembled with thundering hooves
And the hills echoed with their song

The desert lark cries out
But she receives only the answer of the wind

Where the young foals used to play
Sand smooths away any evidence of their existence

I stand in this place listening
Only to my thoughts

“What have we done?”
I cry more than question
