My Tack Room

MidWestHorse Archive on September 1, 2008, 6:05 pm

Oh, months back, everyone had posted about their tack room. So I have finally gotten to mine. Although I have tack all over the house, the majority of it is stored here, in the corner of the first floor apartment that the kids use when visiting us.And of course essentials in the hay storage shed. Extra halters and leads, bath and grooming tools, and supplements as well as grain. And emergency horse medical kit, kept in a bucket topped with a clean small rubber feeder to use for soaks if necessary. Please

Today Was Bath Day!

MidWestHorse Archive on September 1, 2008, 2:56 am

After reading over at Nuzzling Muzzles , Our friend gave her three Arabians a bath, I thought, "I really need to do that." It's been over a month and it's about time. Besides, it's a good way to bond some more and Misty loves a bath. Kola will learn to love a bath.So I gathered up the supplies and went out at 4pm, as the sun was beginning to retreat a bit. My trusty cooking spray for mane tangles, citronella shine shampoo, shiny spray, sponges, mane and tail comb, and bucket and hose. After their

Well, This Post...........

MidWestHorse Archive on August 31, 2008, 9:15 pm

Started as one just for Arlene at Grey Horse Matters , who said she liked the Draft horses I put up on the previous post about the Walworth County Fair, but as it goes, Lethal Smudge, decided to bring one of these little critters in the house. However, she got bored with the large Chipmunk and released it in the house. It was far too fast for me to get an actual picture of the one in here much less catch it. And it managed to escape into the wall at our stairs. Nice! I hope the damned thing isn't

For Those Of You Who.......

MidWestHorse Archive on August 30, 2008, 4:15 pm

Have that hidden weekend biker persona, it is Harley Davidson's 105th year and they are celebrating! Of living only 30 miles from Milwaukee, home of Harley Davidson, you can imagine what has been going on here all week. People have come from all over the world with their bikes to celebrate. This morning is the HD parade in down town Milwaukee, winding up at the Summerfest grounds where there has been and will be tons of live music and parties. There have been events all week. I did not have my camera

Getting Your Horses Ready For Winter

MidWestHorse Archive on August 30, 2008, 1:57 pm

Besides the usually things that you need to do, regular farrier visits and such, there are a few things you need to make sure you have done before the cold sets in or in our case the snow starts flying!1) Check trough heaters. Make sure they are all in proper working order. Give them a test.2) You've ordered your hay and hopefully have it stacked or stored properly. In my case, I have limited storage and my hay guy knows I'll need delivery by end of September. I've been a steady customer of his

Kola Meets Flashlight Fido

MidWestHorse Archive on August 30, 2008, 1:35 am

If you want to hear an alarm snort from a horse, here's a classic! Although she had one that was quite a bit louder, I didn't get that one on video because I was busy holding Mina at that time and asking Steve to get Fido indoors! Good thing Fido can't get in there with his lampshade on. I think she would have stomped him to death if he had. She was seriously freaked. Steve couldn't believe her reaction. This was just a sample. Misty was curious, but not super reactive and no snorting. Please

Well Damned If I Did It Again!

MidWestHorse Archive on August 29, 2008, 9:47 pm

For crying out loud! Stephen and I have been working on this stupid pasture and lawn for days! I mowed the majority of frickin' weeds down and clover and then I felt sorry for the girls and thought, "What will it hurt, just two hours a day for three days." And sure enough this afternoon, Kola got "Slobbers" again, much less intense than last time. So they are locked in until Spring now. Kola was given a dose of Probio, Banamine, and I mixed up some concentrated electrolytes in with some applesauce

Pork Rhines Anyone?

MidWestHorse Archive on August 29, 2008, 6:43 pm

I giggled at Jess's comment for slinkies for pigs (pigs in a blanket), but I have to say it might have saved these two from the sun. They already started cookin' these poor sows. They are sun burned! Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.

A First Glimpse of The Walworth County Fair

MidWestHorse Archive on August 28, 2008, 1:57 pm

An interesting snout!I love Nubian Goats with their ginormous ears!A textbook curly tail!"Baaaahhhh"A big Belgian who was intently watching his buddy get a leg wrapped for injury. The draft horses were the only ones there last night and all of them were clearly irritated. Late on feeding perhaps.I thought this was a cool lookin' chicken! They always have the chicks being hatched out in front of the poultry barn. Too cute! You can buy the chicks by the dozen, if you want. The Midway! Please visit

I'm A Cheater...........

MidWestHorse Archive on August 28, 2008, 1:38 pm

I'm a cheater when it comes to cooking. There are a few things that I make from scratch, but usually a box works well enough for me. So for the gals who want the recipe for Beer Bread, I'm afraid I'll have to direct you to one of my great discoveries, Tastefully Simple! I have bought mixes and spices from this company and have never been disappointed. So I'm including the link directly to the Bountiful Beer Bread . But may I suggest perusing the site a bit as I have never been disappointed. Please

A Busy Day!

MidWestHorse Archive on August 27, 2008, 10:18 pm

This is where the damned coyotes are traipsing through, when there are fields all around us. I heard them under my window at about 3am this morning and by the time I got some shoes on and grabbed the gun, they were quiet and I wasn't sure if they were still out there. This is also the place in which our dogs keep rolling, which makes them stink, which also confirms it! Blasted coyotes!I did some serious weed whacking today including the majority of the pasture, so that Steve and I can lay the weed

Well I Did It !

MidWestHorse Archive on August 26, 2008, 2:35 pm

Might I suggest that the rest of you do as well. What did I do, you ask? Well, I purchased a Soapy Sixpack from Tracey at Mustang Diaries to help support those Mustangs she works so hard with and tries to find homes for. She said in a post when we were all up in arms over the BLM and what they may have to do with a number of Mustangs unadopted sitting on the BLM ranches to basically (my words, not hers) put your money where your mouth is and help to support, so I did. On to the soap! Marvelous stuff

How Could Something So Cute..........

MidWestHorse Archive on August 25, 2008, 4:47 pm

Be so mean? What I have learned about Mina since she has come to live with us. I've come to call her Mean Meenie! She is definitely Mama's girl. I have more control over her than Steve, but not much. She can jump. She can jump onto the pool table. She can jump onto the kitchen counters! While I was at work this weekend, Mina jumped onto the counter after Steve had made himself a tomatoes and toast dinner and just turned to start his tea kettle and she was up there stealing his meal in seconds

Definition Of A "Fully".........

MidWestHorse Archive on August 25, 2008, 4:00 am

We might be able to guess who I am talking about..............1) A Fully has low self esteem and must pick on others to make themselves feel better.2) A Fully gathers others to blindly follow her cause..........The others must also have low self esteem or they would think for themselves.3) A Fully really feels "fugly" inside or she wouldn't need the "others" to boost her ego.4) A Fully doesn't have the guts to ever admit any wrong doing on her behalf and just chooses to ignore the matter after it

MidWestHorse Archive on August 25, 2008, 2:10 am

Looking forward to these next two weeks as I have vacation time and it's time for the Walworth County Fair. I have bunches of chores to get done, but the fair is the our reward! Pasture weeding, lawn care and weeding! Get rid of the now dead flowers! Clean the garage! Clean the house, a serious clean before winter! Lots of crap to accomplish and maybe a couple of quick rides on those fat mares!Crazy Herman, my happy goat. My fat goat. My silly goat.Sunday evening dinner.................If you are
