When You Fall Off...

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 15, 2009, 2:05 pm

Darling wasn't the least bit fazed by her enrollment in club dirt the other day. She jumped onto the school bus with great anticipation of another afternoon of independence. Upon arriving at the barn she found a surprise waiting for her; I'd lined up a riding lesson with a young woman who boards there. Amanda rides eventers and also works part time at the local therapeutic riding center. She was quite excited to be able to help Darling work on her goal of flying through the air and still being in

Welcome to Club Dirt, Darling!

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 14, 2009, 3:01 pm

Yesterday marked the first day back to school after spring break as well as Darling's first jump off the school bus at the barn where Sandy is currently residing. What a feeling of freedom that must have been! No mettling mother to tell her what to do or how to do it...just a girl and her horse. As planned, she called the moment she arrived at the barn to let me know she was there. 30 minutes later she called again to tell me she'd forgotten her camera, and could I bring it?I arrived to find waiting

Wild Babies & Steve Holt! on the Mend

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 13, 2009, 8:22 pm

Okay, maybe not too wild. I'm told the photographer had to fight them off in order to get them in focus! But these are a few of the yearlings that have been set aside for the YAY program. They'll be up at the Arlington adoption on April 25 where the kids will find out which one they get to take home.Currently we've only got 8 kids enrolled in the program, so there may be a couple of yearlings left over for adoption! Y'all better come on out and say hello to me and bring home a mustang. You will

Sandy works Cows and the Color Red

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 12, 2009, 3:26 pm

Sunday Stills assignment this week is RedI went to an Introduction to Cattle Clinic this weekend. My original plan had been to bring Steve Holt!, but as he's still on the mend, Sandy was the mustang who climbed into the trailer and headed down the road bright and early yesterday morning. While he's seen cows as well as buffalo on the other side of the fence while living at Curt's last year, he's not ever been asked to drive, sort, push or cut a living, breathing bovine until yesterday.(The gal who

Jumping Mustang

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 11, 2009, 11:32 am

Sandy has a big day today; he's going to an Introduction to Cattle clinic. I'd wanted to bring Steve Holt!, but of course with his still lingering cough that's not happening.Poor Sandy is the object of way too much affection in his mind. Not only is he my substitute horse, but Darling has decided he must be a hunter jumper. He'd like to give you the Greta Garbo line, "I want to be left alone."Yesterday Sandy was moved down to the neighbor's boarding facility were Darling will be able to jump off

Adopt Me!

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 10, 2009, 2:35 pm

I was sent photos and information on these two youngsters yesterday from the Oregon BLM. Seems Taffy (above) and Biscuit (below) are two of the corral favorites. Both geldings are two years old and stand roughly 14 hands. I wish she'd sent larger files! But alas, you'll just have to make do with the tiny little thumbnail of a photo on poor Taffy. Too bad, because I think you'd fall in love with that silver mane of his! I'm not positive, but I think he'd fall into one of the dilute categories, such

Snot Nosed Booger Boy

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 9, 2009, 5:06 pm

Doesn't Steve Holt! look pretty? This is the day he tried to kill me. I sent the other boys out into the still muddy sacrifice field and closed the gate so they couldn't get back into the barn, then opened up the panels between paddocks so Steve Holt! could come out and stretch his legs while I was cleaning. BIG mistake. For as unenthusiastic as he typically is, today he began racing around the panels, bucking and kicking and carrying on like I was his best, long lost play buddy. Um...no.But he

City Boy goes Car Shopping

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 7, 2009, 2:38 pm

Or...I'm Not Spoiled, My Husband Just Loves Me!City Boy's been wanting a new car. Not that we buy new...not any more. City Boy now loves chasing the deal, finding the car that suits his needs & whimsey as well as his pocket book. If it's not below blue book in price, it doesn't sit in our driveway.Recently City Boy and I had a disagreement. What it was about, I do not recall, but I do know I gave him the cold shoulder for a couple of days. When he finally had a day off, he asked what would make

Memories...in the dusty corners of my mind

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 4, 2009, 1:10 pm

MiKael asked us this morning what our story was. It was followed by 50 questions.FIFTY!I'm not into self inflicted pain this early in the morning, so I won't bother to answer them all...both for my sake and your's! But a story she asked for, and a story you shall get...I was born a poor white girl with a rare (okay, not probably that rare) disorder known as Horse Fever. It struck from an early age and one can only imagine if my parents knew what they would be up against when they put me on my first

Steve Holt! is still sick

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 3, 2009, 1:53 pm

Oh, to be as dry as it was in this photo! They said it was to be nicer this weekend. Yet there is snow falling on my ground, and my horse is struggling in his battle against this bacterial infection. Cold, damp weather does not help one with lung issues, and I'm sorely tempted to walk away from Washington at this moment. I have grown to hate our winters here. Harney County and 300 days of sun are looking mighty fine about now, even if it is 20 degrees colder there this morning.

Layers in Photoshop

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 2, 2009, 3:51 pm

Awhile back I had someone ask me to show them how I make the opaque layers that you see in some of my photos (specifically, the header on the mustang forum.) Since I just learned a new technique from Darling yesterday, I thought it was a good time to create a new header, and I might as well post the how to for those of you who may be interested in trying your hand at it.I started with a new, blank page. Then I created stripes. They're difficult to see in the header above since I covered them with

Doodles and another EMM video

Wild Horse AdoptionApril 25, 2009Black Raven StablesArlington, WAWith Steve Holt! on hold, my focus has shifted to spiffing Sandy up a bit. We were to do a demo at a local Expo put on by the local dressage club, but Sandy has been laid off for so long that I'm not thinking it's going to work. Not that Darling hasn't been riding, but what I'm after is a bit more demanding. Plus he's needing his feet done and I'm not thinking I can get the farrier out quite that soon. So alas, a missed opportunity

Wouldn't you want to jump right in and gobble that up??? Corn, Oats and Barley, mixed with some applesauce and sprinkled with a powdered antibiotic...Steve Holt! turns up his nose and prefers not to touch it. And after all the trouble I went to!Right now Steve Holt!'s nose is drying up, kind of like your's or mine after the worst of the runnies are drying up. But the cough...well, that was more noticeable yesterday. I've been unsure if he's been eating his grain after I leave or if it just gets

Hoofball, Bronchitis, and Sunday Stills

Mustang Diaries Archive on March 29, 2009, 2:51 pm

I've been a bit tied up the past couple weekends so haven't participated in Sunday Stills, but this week's assignment was easy enough. Landscapes. Oh, I'm sure there are those who've gone all out and captured some totally amazing shots. Me? Well...here's how the day went:Darling and I were out of bed early and headed north to a hoofball clinic. This was designed to help both horse and rider get the feel of moving around one of those big balls and then transferring the movements later to a cow. Now,

Extremely Entertaining

More Extreme Than Before! You must, simply MUST click the link. Because if you thought the Mustang Makeovers were extreme...well, you ain't seen nothing yet!Tomorrow (which may well be today by the time you read this) Darling and I are going to play hoofball with the 'boys'. What's hoofball? Soccer for horses, I think. A great big ball that we get to knock around. It's a fun clinic that is supposed to help a horse develop his following skills for cattle work. I'm sure we'll have some interesting

At Last...Flicka Video!

Mustang Diaries Archive on March 25, 2009, 1:50 pm

Here she is, all 14 hands (maybe) of mustang dynamo! This little mare is the nicest mover. She's 5 years old and really seems to want to please. She struggles a bit to the left but in the round pen with the rail to support her did much better than when we were out in the arena. You can see a little of her snarky mare-itude when I ask her to do what she doesn't want. Just a bit of left over fear, though, and I'm confident we can work that out of her in the next few weeks. Flicka is available for

Riding Course Video

Mustang Diaries Archive on March 24, 2009, 1:45 pm

Well, here it is! Our riding course portion of the Northwest Extreme Mustang Makeover. I've watched it and nit picked myself to death, but am still very pleased with how Steve Holt! managed to pull himself together and up in the over all standings. Before leaving for Oregon I spent a great deal of time watching both the EMM videos as well as reining videos on you tube. I knew Steve Holt! wouldn't have the control at a fast paced lope, so I elected to go for slow. As Ruben pointed out, I played it

Steve Holt! managed to pull himself up in the standings from 23rd on Thursday to 15th over all after the riding course where we tied for 12th...not as good as I'd have liked to have done, but his ride was nice and smooth, and we received several compliments from many people. So while we didn't make the finals, I'm happy with how he did.I'm struggling to get the video uploaded, so you may need to wait until we're home for that. Darling also got video of all top ten finalists, but again it will take
