I Did It!

Darling's Watercolor"Here's my halter! Take me with you!"Steve Holt! has been pacing the paddock and crying each time he sees the horse trailer getting ready to go somewhere. I've begun hauling him alongside Sandy up to the riding club in order to get our groundwork underway again before climbing back on. The last couple of rides on Sandy have indicated my back is ready, so it's simply a matter of making sure there are no loose threads after this seven week vacation."I'll be good...I promise!"Last

Wild Eyes on Sunday

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 17, 2009, 1:18 pm

Our photo assignment for Sunday Stills this week was Eyes, and for me this was almost as wonderful as shooting barns. Empire, one of Darling's two new yearlings for the YAY program, has the most incredible eyelashes ever. Photographing them was not easy, however, as she did not want to stand still. It was either run to the other side of the paddock to show off for the boys (they learn early, these wild girls!), or come stand on my toes, pushing her face right up into the camera and fogging the lens.Of

Let's Do Lunch!

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 15, 2009, 4:25 am

This coming Sunday there is a meeting to which you are invited. It's the Northwest Region Wild Horse and Burro Association. Or club, depending on my mood and how formal I want to sound.Basically, a handful of mustang enthusiasts who gather for a good meal and discussion on how to promote wild horse adoption in our region.Right now we're working on the Youth & Yearlings program. Nine little punks young trainers went home a few weeks ago with yearlings and will be coming back to the youth show

Blogger's Wild Road Trip, Anyone?

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 13, 2009, 4:32 am

The old dun featured on my blog header and background had quite the injury. You know, of course, it doesn't take much to convince me. A comment left over at Pony Girl's blog got me to thinking...maybe we need to make a road trip! To Oregon, of course, for a wild horse photography vacation.Yes? You agree?I'm certain Darling wouldn't mind an opportunity to visit with Dibs again.Perhaps we'll spot his big brother again, too!The ever elusive, on guard Sox paced the top of the ridge in December when he

Itching to ride and Another cutie overlooked

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 12, 2009, 1:20 pm

Steve Holt! is tired of vacationYesterday, Darling and I hauled Sandy and Steve Holt! up to the riding club where she rode and I hung out with my boy. He's beginning to get bored with no job, and it was all I could do to keep myself out of the saddle. My back still has a small sore spot which gives me little to no problem for the most part, but Steve Holt! is a big mover, and you may recall when I first climbed on board in January I could feel every hoof hit the ground for a solid month. So I'm

Wild Weekend

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 11, 2009, 1:42 pm

This weekend City Boy loaded up his family and hauled us over the mountain for a non-horsey day in Winthrop. The drive was lovely, as evidenced by the above photo, although the top of the pass still had plenty of snow. 6' pushed off to the sides in some spots! And while we did hit cloud cover and sprinkles driving down the other side, by the time we got to town it was lovely out once more.Unbeknown to us, there was some sort of festivity taking place just outside of town, where tents were pitched

Sunday Stills

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 10, 2009, 12:46 pm

Black and White? Did someone say Black and White? Our Sunday Stills Challenge this week was to pick out two subjects from the past, then shoot them (or convert) in black and white. Having a fondness for black and white, this was pretty easy.My first former challenge chosen is religion. Marbletown Angels. Sounds like a heavenly baseball team, doesn't it?Both of these photos were shot at Bayview Cemetery. The second photo stands above the Bland grave site. The age old rumor was (and is) that her eyes

BLM Internet Adoption

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 7, 2009, 12:20 pm

Adopt This Horse! The BLM's Internet Adoption is underway, and you won't want to miss it! 151 mustangs gathered from across the western states are ready to come home with you. Well...not all 151 with just one of you (although I'm certain if you've got the facilities we may be able to arrange something!) The horse I've got pictured here currently has no bids on him. He's four years old, 15.1 hands, and was gathered from Coyote Lakes HMA in Oregon. That's where Quiet Storm was from! You should adopt

Where there's one voice, there's hope

Mustang Diaries Archive on May 5, 2009, 1:07 pm

Darling once used this music for another wild horse video, and after seeing the 3 Strikes horses, I knew I needed to use it again. We are each but one voice, often feeling helpless, but as the song says, as long as there's one voice, there is hope.

This weeks Embarrassing Moment brought to you by Sunday Stills

the original barn at GreenhillYears and years ago...decades, even...when I was a little girl, I would ride my horse to this place along with other members of my 4-H club and we'd take a riding lesson or two. It was owned by one of the girls' family, although they didn't live here. With it being a short mile around the corner, I decided last month that Flicka would do well there where she could socialize with other people and broaden her horizon, so to speak. Darling, of course, was thrilled to have

Your Horses are Fighting!

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 29, 2009, 4:46 pm

It never ceases to strike fear into the hearts of barn pony owners when they see a couple of pastured horses lashing out at one another. "Your horses are fighting!" says the anxious voice. Their pampered babies live in stalls and have individual turn out so as not to get into scrapes. Which is not entirely a bad thing. But my ponies...well, let's face it. They're from the wrong side of the pony world tracks. There is no bubble wrap to keep them safe from bumps and bruises. It all begins innocently

Ranch Owner in Jail...Need for Aid Urgent

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 28, 2009, 11:10 am

Enhance the Mustang's quality of life by creating a natural setting that fosters the independence and integrity of the wild horses.I know many of you follow Fugly, so you'll already be familiar with this case. I've struggled over it for the past couple of weeks now, frustrated on so many levels with the absolute inhumanity of it all. From the Habitat For Horses website:Alliance, Nebraska– At least 60 horses are dead and more than 100 others are seriously emaciated at a mustang facility in Morrill

Empire & Avalon

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 27, 2009, 1:07 pm

Just what is Darling doing?Yesterday was crazy busy around here. At least for City Boy and Darling. City Boy worked on getting Surely's new hitch and brake control rigged up so that she's now ready to pull the SilverLite! And as long as the sun was shining, he figured he'd mow the lawn as well. City Boy and I have different ideas on this lawn mowing thing. We both like riding mowers, but he complains about the divets and uneven cut resulting from my version.Darling's new charges are home. Avalon,

Be Still on Sunday...

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 26, 2009, 2:21 pm

This weekend was great! Although my back probably has other words to describe it's experience. I started out feeling pretty loose in the area of my tender ribs; I was able to walk and get around fairly easily; rest periods now and then during the day helped greatly. Friday night Darling and I stayed with our friends, Steve and Janice, who's property borders the Black Raven facility. A nice little walk across the fields was all it took to get there.Once there, however, something happened. I'd been

Cowgirls Don't Cry

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 23, 2009, 9:38 pm

Steve Holt! had a close encounter with the hotwire...poor baby!Monday was so beautiful! I hauled Sandy and Steve Holt! to the tree farm and took a short ride in the sunshine. Steve Holt! didn't turn one sweaty hair, and Sandy was only barely damp beneath his saddle after our 45 minute ride. And without a single sign of a cough after climbing the hills on Steve Holt!'s part, I decided it was time for him to get busy under saddle again.Tuesday I hauled him to the riding club and let him play for a

She's the Mother I Never Had...

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 21, 2009, 6:50 pm

Someday Darling will be saying that about Froglander, mark my words! Saturday Darling and Sandy headed out to their second horse show, but this time she was riding English. And cantering! I made her do walk trot classes at the last show, and she hadn't been happy. Since there weren't any at this show, it was walk, trot, canter for the two of them, and Darling was delighted! Froglander brought up a headstall for Sandy to use as the cavesson on the one Darling had purchased second hand was a bit small

Cowboy Church...and Sunday Stills

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 19, 2009, 4:18 pm

At one time I had a blog called Marbletown Angels. I like the angel above, which is from Bayview Cemetery in Bellingham, WA. Darling was a willing model that day...don't you just love the converse sneakers? As it turns out, angels are few and far between. And after awhile I ran out of local cemeteries to photograph, and the blog passed into oblivion.Today's Sunday Still assignment is religion. Architecture is what Ed was looking for primarily, but with what some consider to be a bizarre love of

Mustang Diaries Archive on April 17, 2009, 6:34 pm

A couple months back I got a request from Northwest Horse Source to write an article on my experience with the Extreme Mustang Makeover. It was their 'events' issue and they wanted a little something covering the Makeover. Cool beans...anything I can do to spread the word on mustang adoption is good with me. I was quite surprised, though, when I found out it was used as the cover story! After our little fun day with the cattle, I was again asked to put together a wee little something for their blog,
