Spring Is On It's Way.............................

MidWestHorse Archive on March 5, 2009, 5:17 pm

The Canadian Geese are headed north!I removed their blankets at breakfast today. No more blankets until next winter. And I swallowed a mouth full of horse hair....."Hack!" They couldn't wait to get out and stretch their legs. You can hear me call them both "Dorks" at the end. I had to fold back the cattle fencing first, then the electric ribbons and they were both trying to push through the ribbons and I had to tell them back until I could get the ribbons. Misty was trying to do her Autumn trick

I'm Looking For Someone..............

MidWestHorse Archive on March 2, 2009, 11:04 pm

Ok, I'm calling on anyone out in the cyber world. This is a photo I received way back in 2000. It was taken in 1999. The young lady in the lower right of this pic is the half-sister of my daughter, Zoe. Her first name is Connie, I know she has at least one child. She was about 21 in this pic. The lady above her is Marta, maiden name ?(Albrecht). She is Connie's mother. Last known in Oklahoma. Connie was is the Armed forces, which one , I don't know, but I think either Air force or Navy. I lost all

Well, One Hell Of A Weekend..........

MidWestHorse Archive on March 2, 2009, 2:11 pm

Saturday, I returned home from work in the morning to feed the horses and found that their water had begun to freeze! Crap! So I ran through the house checking all fuses, turning them off and back on again for a restart. My problem is that I must sleep and I've got, if I'm lucky 5 hours to do it in before I must get up and head off to work again, so even if I fix the water, I've got no way of watching it to see if the ice melts. I thought, better safe than sorry and I called my neighbor, who was

We're Due For...........

MidWestHorse Archive on February 20, 2009, 10:47 pm

Five to eight inches of snow tonight! Yay! I'm off to work soon and that means I'll be driving home in it in the morning with chores to be done before I'm off to work again tomorrow night . Looking forward to that, NOT! Jack's piddles outdoors are few and far in between. Another Yay! Steve is managing to get them out at least at eight pm long after I'm at work. Tomorrow will be the challenge getting enough sleep to be able to work another 12 hours Saturday night and actually stay awake. Worried

Calling All Dog Whisperers!

MidWestHorse Archive on February 17, 2009, 9:35 pm

Now I've raised a few pups in my time and rather successfully. I've always used a crate, however in the case of Spot the Border Collie, we gave up on the crate and flunked puppy kindergarten, BUT in saying that he is very well behaved and was easily potty trained with pads first, then outside. He knows his boundaries, however we allow him to kiss. Mina came to us not housebroken and it only took a few weeks to get her there and now she gives me cues when she needs to go outside. The old man was

Things Are Getting Easier For Me, Anyway.......

MidWestHorse Archive on February 17, 2009, 12:31 am

Last night the coyotes returned, so I found myself out on the deck with my little gun in my slippers at 11pm shooting into the field beyond the goats and girls. It did scare them off. I need a rifle with a night sight!I decided to pick up some electrolytes for the mares as on Sunday, when I put their blankets on again and bleached the trough and refilled, they both looked a little tucked up. They never seem to drink enough water in the winter in my opinion so I thought it wouldn't hurt. I also put

A Quick Update.....................

MidWestHorse Archive on February 11, 2009, 11:43 pm

Stephen apparently not very happy with his photo op! Mr.Pearson has been hobbling around and his office is still in quite a state. I don't dare touch his paper work! He has his first follow-up appointment tomorrow. I'm hoping he gets hard casted and all looks good. Not sure if I'll still make it to work Friday. We'll just see how he does and play it by ear. I did get approved for a few short hours of FMLA.Of course, yesterday it nearly hit 60*F so I removed their blankets and now I'm feeling guilty

It Takes Two, Baaabyeee.................

MidWestHorse Archive on February 8, 2009, 3:44 pm

It takes two baaabyeee.........................But I'm down to one................. Yep, Just down to one................LOL!A lesson learned! You never realize exactly what your partner does do to contribute to the house hold until you are doing both his jobs and yours! I mean you do know in the back of your head somewhere, but it really comes to light when suddenly faced with the reality of it. Steve's jobs included bringing up the 40# bags of wood pellets and keeping those stoves running, occasionally

Well, This Has Been One Hell Of A Day...........

MidWestHorse Archive on February 3, 2009, 5:10 am

Just for starters, Stephen managed to break his ankle in three places by slipping on the ice whilst picking up the mail. Of course, I was indoors and cleaning the house, so I didn't hear him yelling for help. The dogs were barking and I figured he was down in the garage futzing around with the stack of wood pellets. He managed to drag himself to the downstairs door and yell loud enough. At first, I couldn't quite connect the noise I was hearing and then I realized he was screaming "Help". I ran

This Is Too Close For Comfort..............

MidWestHorse Archive on February 2, 2009, 11:06 am

This was in the news on Saturday, January 31st, 2009. This is just one county slightly north from us and last year's sighting in Rock County whose Cougar somehow ended up in Chicago to be killed by the police, one county west. Literally both counties just a few miles from us. I've had my normal troubles with Coyotes and ours are big up here because they've mixed with feral dogs, but this is crazy. Apparently the Cougars are making a comeback, which I'm not against, after all, they used to populate
