Miracle of Miracles!!!

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 14, 2009, 6:50 am

It began as any other day...except for the snow part. That part is not an any other day weather occurrence, thankfully. But it surely was part of yesterday. And as you probably know, I am not a fan of the four letter S word. There is, of course, little I can do about it falling, and training must continue.Tika hadn't worn the saddle since Thursday. On Friday, the too small sheet had been her only training exercise, and I'd given her Saturday off. So I wondered how she'd react to the approach of

Back to the Future

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 13, 2009, 4:01 pm

Today's Sunday Stills word is Technology. Being as I live in my own little reality which appears to have more to do with the past than the future...let's face it, Living Legends doesn't exactly scream rocket science...I had to shift gears. There was a time when technology meant a change in bit styles, or perhaps a new tree in a saddle. Or how about an upgrade from a hinge to a door that could slide across the front of your barn? Just imagine not having to kick that snow drift out of the way in order

Guess What Tika Did?

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 12, 2009, 2:47 pm

The temps have begun to rise. It was nearly almost not freezing yesterday! That was good news, because I left my hose outside in the cold and it was frozen. And while the water tubs had a good, solid layer of ice on top, the mustangs are ice munching maniacs and managed to chew and lick their way down to the water below. If you were here yesterday, you may have noticed the photo of Tika. Did you see what she was wearing? Darling's English saddle! I know...didn't I just say I was going to wait until

Alison Hart Guest Blog

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 11, 2009, 1:58 pm

I’ll admit it: I have been horse crazy since my first Steiff pony and Billy and Blaze picture book by C.W. Anderson. Decades later, I still ride, continue to read horse books (try Chosen by a Horse a memoir by Susan Richardson) and now I have added writing about horses to my passions. Under my real name, Alice Leonhardt, and my pen name, Alison Hart, I have written over fifty books about horses. Many are contemporary, including books in the Nancy Drew and Thoroughbred series, my own Riding Academy

When Did I Move to Alaska?

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 10, 2009, 4:21 pm

There it is, my favorite toolI tried. Really I did. I wanted to be out there working Tika while the sun was almost warming the air. But by the time I finished dragging the blasted hose out of the house...yes, to stay thawed, it's coiled into a trash can and they both live indoors...and watering, the sun had once again slipped below the tippy tops of the trees and all I was left with was mottled light and chilled air. When did I move to Alaska, anyway? There's that shadow of mine, standing around,

Tika's Progress

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 9, 2009, 9:09 pm

It's been cold. Way, way too cold. But it's a dry cold, so I'm happy! Unfortunately, I don't always get out to work with Tika while the sun is still visible. It doesn't actually show it's face in the morning until 9:40, and by 4 in the afternoon, it's descending behind the treetops. Sunlight, and the small amount of warmth that goes with it, is in short supply. But as long as I can see where I'm placing my feet, and where the horse is, I'm okay.Tika thought that having a day off over the weekend

Pick It up and Read

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 8, 2009, 6:46 pm

Recently, along with a few other horse loving bloggers, I was contacted and asked if Alison Hart could do a guest blog to help get the word out about three books which will be coming out in 2010. Alison has written stories for American Girl, The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley, as well as The Riding Club. In other words? She's gifted at story telling for the 8-12 year old crowd. And as the aunt of a young girl who falls into that age group, I've got to tell you that it's a real treat to find

City Boy sent me an email the other day letting me know about a photo contest being sponsored by Troxel. Great! Sounds like fun. I figured I'd haul Sandy over to my friends place and let him get acquainted with the cattle and an open field on Saturday, then Sunday we'd return and Darling could ride and I'd get some photos. It was bitterly cold, and we didn't last long. Sandy was more concerned about the fact that there was grass beneath his feet that the cattle had yet to rip out by the roots (which,

Let the Training Begin

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 6, 2009, 12:20 am

Trainers from around the northwest have braved the possibility of iced, snow covered highways and passes this weekend, traveling from their homes to the Wild Horse Corrals in Burns to pick up their new wild partner in hopes of competing, and possibly even winning, at the Northwest Extreme Mustang Makeover.I was not one of them.I had decided several months ago not to compete this year, but to look for other events, such as the Extreme Cowboy Race, to set my sights upon. I really wanted to get the

I'm Getting a Cold...

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 4, 2009, 2:54 pm

Better now than, say, three weeks from now! Have you looked at your calendars lately? Christmas is just 21 days away! Scary. Really, really scary. Now that my horse trailer is back in action, thanks to a new axle, Darling and I have begun hauling the boys back up to the riding club. Darling has stated she'll just be working Steve Holt! from the ground the first few days. Smart kid. It's been over a month since the horse show where we found ourselves begging for a ride home, and despite Steve Holt!

And the Winner Is!

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 4, 2009, 4:39 am

Curves and Circles!I'd already decided upon Circles. I just love the clean lines and simplicity and contrast. I couldn't decide between Legs and Curves, though...and then patterns kept jumping out at me as well. Seems the rest of you felt similarly, but in the end Curves edged it's way into the second place slot, so that's what it shall be.And as for those of you who took the time to contemplate and comment? I've got another winner. AKPonyGirl...it's you! You Win!!! Email me at desperatehorsewife@gmail.com

Choose Two...

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 2, 2009, 6:17 am

Yeah, right. Two?You're talking to someone who agonizes over the simplicity of toast or the yummy taste of strawberry waffles in the morning. To most people, it's a no brainer, you'd choose...Well, I don't know which you'd choose. Which would you choose? Is there a right? A wrong? Am I in a hurry, or have I got time to savor the flavor? I'm so confused! But that's what they said. Choose two. And I need help. Help me! Help me please! Just tell me what you like, and what you don't like. I think I know

The End

Mustang Diaries Archive on December 1, 2009, 7:20 am

The photo a day challenge is over as of today. It's been a good experience. I don't know that I'm really any more familiar or better with my camera than I was to begin with, but it certainly has challenged me to get out each and every day and take plenty of photos. I found myself stretched to get an image that I liked which lent itself to the word of the day. For instance, abstract, above. I'd gotten a shot the previous day of a mowed corn field and liked the lines it created. I fiddled with it

This week brought to you by the letter T

Mustang Diaries Archive on November 29, 2009, 4:05 pm

T is for Trouble...that's good enough for meT is for Trouble...that's good enough for meT is for Trouble...that's good enough for meOh...Tracey, Tracey, Tracey starts with T!So, today's Sunday Stills challenge was to find something with the letter T. I'm going to venture to guess there will be a few turkeys out there, but not here. Well...okay, there are days when I'm called a turkey, but more often I've been referred to as trouble, which also starts with T which rhymes with P which stands for pool...but

Wild Hore Antagonist

Mustang Diaries Archive on November 28, 2009, 6:36 am

"Hey, Darling! Get over here and antagonize this horse for me, will ya?""Huh?"Not the sort of thing you generally hear as a request around here, but what can I say? The word for the day in the photo challenge was expression...and boy, let me tell you, there are some good ones out in that paddock! My mind immediately determined that Wadatika was the way to go with this assignment. With those eyes of her's, there's no way you can avoid expression, be it anger, vulnerability, or curiosity. That girl

Who's Left?

Mustang Diaries Archive on November 25, 2009, 1:48 am

A few days ago Becky asked for an inventory of who is here and who is not. At the time, Apple Pony was still here, even though we'd thought he had been sold, and I think that was confusing (he'd had a couple weeks board still paid, which is why he'd still been here.) Of course, since then y'all know that the sale fell through, and that he left this past weekend to go back to his Whidbey Island home.So who does that leave us?Sky Bar has someone on pins and needles, waiting for the BLM to get the

Darling Says Goodbye

Mustang Diaries Archive on November 22, 2009, 2:03 pm

I lay there in bed, listening to the rain spilling out of the gutters once again, despite City Boy having cleaned them earlier in the day. The rain is relentless. But it wasn't the only reason for no sleep. I was still trying to decide which photo to use for the EPN photo of the day. Our word? Action. Now, normally this is a word I have absolutely no problem with, but yesterday seemed to be nothing but trouble. The pasture is wet and soupy. The only horse who wants to get remotely active out there
