The Aftermath of the Pineapple Express.........

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 15, 2010, 12:52 am

My shift ended last night at midnight although I guess I was a few minutes later than that when I finally checked out. The mens' department was a mess so getting it "recovered" for today's sales day was a hectic, stressful ordeal with that midnight deadline hanging over my head and it must have been that way in the other apparel departments as well because all of us were running like little mice frantically preparing their families for a storm. Little did we know the storm was indeed outside brewing,

The Pineapple Express............ Moving On..........

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 14, 2010, 1:05 am

Once we got finished with all our stuff yesterday, I finally did get a chance to catch up on the news. When I did, I was horrified to see the Pineapple Express had not been so kind to many folks as it had been to us. There has been lots of flooding and damage many places. Mostly the flooding to this point was up north and on the Olympic Peninsula. Both are more rural locations so lots of horse people could be affected. Although the news didn't report on horse people specifically, I couldn't help

Pineapple Updates....... and Sunday Afternoon Activities

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 13, 2010, 12:35 am

The temperatures and the incessant rain suggest the Pineapple Express has arrived but it looks like the weatherman's fears have not been realized........at least yet. It's probably too early to speak until the system has moved on through and to be honest, I have no idea how long that's supposed to take. I haven't seen a weather report since the first predications of this weather in the first place. The first picture is my driveway. While there's lots of water at least it's just of the puddles variety

The Pineapple Express

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 11, 2010, 6:18 am

According to the latest weather predictions a weather system known as the Pineapple Express is heading our direction bringing with it one of the worst storms our state has seen in years. . Once the system reaches us it is expected to dump 1 - 3 inches of rain in the lowlands and 5 to somewhere in the double digits in the mountains, which just would happen to be us, in the first twenty four hours. Since this system originates in Hawaii, it brings with it warmer temperatures which means high avalanche

The Winter Bug

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 10, 2010, 1:16 am

I'm still trudging along here sick and trying to get myself through. I had no voice for nearly a week and at least that is now back although not nearly "normal" yet. It seems like one set of symptoms gets better and another set decides to kick in. The latest seems to be I just cannot get warm and if I am warm, I am too warm.I am not sleeping all that well at night. Even Nyquil hadn't totally fixed the problem although it has made it better. My body aches from coughing and all the medication I'm

Wendy Potts Clinic.......Finishing Up My Ride

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 9, 2010, 3:50 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormTo take the exercise a step further, Wendy Potts wanted to incorporate asking the Arabian horse to raise up his head. Because Storm's only work had really been about putting his head down, the horse wants to fall into that with any little bit of pressure on the rein. Then the horse immediately falls into what he knows. which is dropping over vertically with no impulsion and that, of course, results in that heavy on the forehand

The Wendy Potts Clinic........What Did I See??

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 8, 2010, 1:23 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormI climbed back onto my Arabian horse anxious to test what I perceived as Wendy Potts' method of dealing with my horse. Pulling the horse's head to my knee and getting that tight turn is something that I used to do when riding just started horses. I have to admit I'd dropped it from my arsenal of tools some time ago. Now I couldn't wait to see what or how this could work for me with Storm.I realized as I watched Wendy Potts ride

The Wendy Potts Clinic........Some of Wendy's Thoughts.... and Mine

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 7, 2010, 1:30 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormI suspect Wendy Potts rode Storm for enough time to be sure she understood exactly what his problem was and what would be the best way to approach that problem with this horse. She tried a number of different little variations in this process and got a chance to see his reaction to each as well as what produced stumbling. Once she figured she had a handle on things, she turned the horse back over to me so she could show me what

The Wendy Potts Clinic.......Wendy Rides Storm

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 6, 2010, 1:28 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormOnce we had the stirrups changed to what she thought was the right length, Wendy Potts was up in the saddle on Storm. The horse had no reaction to a different rider mounting, which was good, but for some reason as she put her foot into the stirrup I had flashbacks of a similar situation with Rhythm years ago. I will never forget the day that Rhythm thought no one should ride him but me. The person trying to get on nearly found

The Wendy Potts Clinic.......Onto Riding Storm

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 4, 2010, 1:48 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormThere was that one relatively simple skirmish about the challenging stallion and then my Arabian horse was moving forward and listening to me. With that altercation now behind us we went right back to working on the rail to show Wendy Potts what I was getting from the horse since his return to me.I worked Storm at a trot while moving him laterally off my leg from the inside to the outside. As I was doing this I told Wendy Potts

Murphy

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on December 2, 2010, 3:06 am

What is it about that fellow, Murphy, that he just must show up when it's the most inconvenient? And how is it that he always knows to provide what is absolutely needed the least? I'll tell you, that Murphy sure knows how to complicate things, even this darn cold.Instead of a quiet Tuesday night at work, I got stormed right from the start. I was scheduled for the ladies fitting rooms the first hour of my shift it seemed that women and girls were coming out of the woodwork with stacks of clothes

Sick.......

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 30, 2010, 8:00 pm

Normally, I don't get sick often, or at least, I think I don't. I have to admit I like it that way. Being sick sucks and it gets in the way of doing what I want. At my age we get warned about getting flu shots and taking extra precautions because we, older folks, are more vulnerable to even a minor illness turning into something life threatening. I guess because I don't get sick often I feel like I'm immune to such issues so I pretty much ignore those warnings.......bad me.But what the hey! Maybe

The Wendy Potts Clinic.......Storm Answers the Challenge

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 29, 2010, 1:30 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormDuring the Wendy Potts clinic was not the first time Storm has dealt with stallion type issues. Storm has experience with being challenged by another stallion, or maybe I should say that the Arabian horse has experience with challenging another stallion. Even if it was 3 1/2 years ago, I'm sure Storm remembers the day he thought he would take on Legs. I know it the first thing I thought of when I heard that stallion screaming at

Black Friday.......and Bear Paws

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 28, 2010, 1:35 am

I did survive Black Friday working at the store but boy could I tell stories. Those stories wouldn't necessarily be about this year's Black Friday experience but break room talk had some interesting recounts of year's past that made me think I was glad I wasn't around at those times.Though the store was brimming with people when I arrived at 7 and the checkout lines where about 40 carts long in each line, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it could have been. No one was killed or even beaten over

Thanksgiving Thoughts.........

I've been running around cyberspace all morning trying to keep up with my blogging friends AND trying to get my goggle reader updated with horsey blogs I've been having to locate the hard way. That makes me a bit late in posting my list of what I'm thankful for on this glorious Thanksgiving Day.......and all those Thanksgiving Day posts have made me a bit sappy I suspect but here goes.........I'm thankful Lindsay's cancer is still in remission. There will never be anything or anyone more important

Still Buried in Snow

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 25, 2010, 1:37 am

These are more of Dave's snow pics. This is also part of what Legs sees looking out of his stall, just a different angle. The round pen looks innocent enough but there's a sheet of ice underneath that now that's about 3 inches thick definitely not safe for horses. Trouble is definitely missing his turnout time in there. He normally is terrorizing Doc in there each day as they hang close to Tango getting acquainted with him as a future pasture mate. Ice skating has never been my thing so probably

Life and Record Breaking ?? Snows.......

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 24, 2010, 1:10 am

Sometimes life just has to trump the series. I'll get back to posting about Storm and the clinic but for now these pics of the snows covering my farm take precedence for me. Caring for thirty horses in this stuff takes real commitment. Fortunately for me, Dave and Lindsay have that because I've been working at Fred Meyer instead of here on the farm. I am such a chicken about driving in the snow, that Dave has also taken on the task of ferrying me back and forth to work. He's a great driver in the

The Wendy Potts Clinic.......Getting Started with Storm

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 23, 2010, 1:27 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormJust before our scheduled ride time, I went back to the stall to get Storm. Removing his cooler, I could tell the horse was more focused on what what going on in the arena than he was about me. His eyes were locked on the horse travelling on the far side of the rail. I just had to wonder what he could be thinking.I tapped him on the shoulder as I readied the bridle. The Arabian horse startled for an instant as I broke his concentration

The Weny Potts Clinic.......The Morning of Our Ride

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 22, 2010, 3:32 am

Part 1- Wendy Potts ClinicPart 1 - Sizing Things Up - Status on StormWe were scheduled for our ride at 10 AM so I'd decided to be there early before anyone arrived so I could get my horse bitted and lunged in the arena before anyone arrived. I had specific issues I wanted help with on this horse and I didn't want to waste our valuable lesson time dealing with his concern with his new surroundings. As it was I got plenty of time to work on these issues. I awoke at 2 AM and was unable to get back

One More Thing..........Before Getting to Storm.........

MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses Archive on November 21, 2010, 1:37 am

Part 1I did forget one part about this clinic that I had really wanted to post. Before I get started with Storm I think I'm going to visit that subject as well. As I mentioned in my very first post, Wendy Potts can really sit a horse, pretty much any horse from what I can tell. Throughout the clinic there were resistive horses, as you can imagine. It's pretty normal for horses to be resistant when getting asked to do something more difficult than usual. As a matter of self preservation, Mother Nature
