I had two great lessons on Thursday night. There was a little warm-up, then running though the tests. We are ready. Both horses felt great.Today I finished clipping them both (ears too!) and rode Kaswyn. I'm so thrilled that Kaswyn has been sound. He's getting his spark back and feeling more fit with each passing week. Oh, and I also fixed the arena drag so I could drag the arena.Tomorrow I will have my last ride on each pony before we head down to Lexington on Monday. All of my grooming stuff and

Two lessons and a fit

Dressage Mom Archive on September 16, 2009, 2:35 pm

Last night I had two lessons, one each on Skyy and Albert.Skyy's lesson was great. It started off kind of shaky, with Skyy not making a consistent contact to the bit. After a little warm-up my trainer had me ride a 20 meter trot circle at the far end of the arena. Then she asked me to have the horse stretch his nose down to the ground. Here is how I usually do this, especially with Skyy. I ask him to put his neck extra round and extra deep, then I push a bit with my legs and seat and at the same

Oh. Okay. Calm, right?

Dressage Mom Archive on September 9, 2009, 3:43 pm

I just realized that I will have two more lessons before we leave for Sport Horse Nationals. Two more chances to run through the tests in a regulation sized arena. Did I say I was ready for this show? I'm not so sure anymore. Yikes.

Thursday's lessons

Dressage Mom Archive on September 4, 2009, 10:30 pm

I had two fantastic lessons on Thursday. Skyy was first. We really made some breakthroughs with the contact. When I first started riding him it was hard for him to make consistent contact with the bit at all. He would come above the bit, dive below, go behind the vertical, take his head left and right, etc. Then we got to the point where he was bearing down really hard on the bit. It was nice that he was making contact but he was doing it on his terms.Last night my trainer had me push him forward

I got tired of the old layout. Here's a new one. I'll be fooling around with it for a bit so the look might change a little in the next few days. Like it? Hate it? Let me know!

Feels like old times, only better

Dressage Mom Archive on September 2, 2009, 1:18 am

I had a lesson on Kaswyn tonight. My trainer came to our barn because the other two boys were out with their owners riding on trails so I had no trailer. It's nice to ride Kaswyn in the large arena but it's not essential since we're not getting ready for a show or anything. And boy, am I glad I didn't try and take him to the show. It's obvious now that he is very weak and needs some time to get himself back in shape. We didn't work that long but the work that we did was very productive. My trainer

Stuffy

Dressage Mom Archive on August 30, 2009, 11:31 pm

I was supposed to ride all three horses today, but was attacked by a nasty head cold last night at around 11:30. We were at the tail end of our Dip Party that we were hosting at our house, and it kind of came out of nowhere. I thought it was just a massive allergy attack but today I feel run down and terrible. I feel weak when I get up and walk around so there is no way I was going to be able to school three horses. So I stayed home. Here's hoping I don't regret missing one schooling day. I'll just

Week in lessons

Dressage Mom Archive on August 28, 2009, 1:21 am

I had three lessons this week. It's getting hard to keep them all straight, and I neglected to take notes Tuesday after two of the lessons. I don't know if I mentioned that I'm hauling over to my trainer's barn for lessons twice a week for one lesson on each horse. Yeah, I'm crazy. Anyway, I'm going to try and get some things written down so I will remember what I'm supposed to be working on. Nationals is less than a month away (!!!) so I must make progress!Skyy's lesson on Tuesday was a good one.

The Sister Chronicles. Ahoy! - Part 2

Dressage Mom Archive on August 24, 2009, 4:33 pm

Part 1 So Tracy and I were playing on the pier at the River House. Someone, probably me, got the bright idea of getting into the boats. All I know is that I got into the motor boat, and Tracy got into the row boat. Both were tied to the pier, so we weren't really going anywhere. We started to play a game where we were captains of our ships. We were at war with each other, and since the boats were tied on different sides of the pier we were hurling insults and splashing water at each other across

The Sister Chronicles. Ahoy! - Part 1

Dressage Mom Archive on August 19, 2009, 12:44 pm

I have had a few stories milling around in my head for awhile now. Here is one of the more interesting ones. Surprisingly, it does not involve horses.I have an older sister. She is fifteen months older than me. Here's how that happened. My parents got married and wanted kids as soon as possible. My mom failed to get pregnant right away, and so she went to see her doctor. It was the early 60's, so her doctor gave his best infertility advice, which was "You're trying too hard. Just relax and it will

Rotting

Dressage Mom Archive on August 15, 2009, 4:20 pm

About ten days ago I started feeling rather sick. I thought I had just strained my stomach muscles from riding or something, and started popping the antiacids. When that didn't clear it up I went to a bland diet for a few days. Then on Wednesday night I was woken every two hours with stabbing pain in my stomach.A visit to the doctor on Thursday confirmed my suspicions - that I have a peptic ulcer. They put me on a proton pump inhibitor (which slows down the production of stomach acid) which made

A week in review

Dressage Mom Archive on August 12, 2009, 3:01 pm

Wow, so busy, no time to write!Okay so let me get caught up. The saddle lady came out and thankfully said that Kaswyn's saddle fits him fine still and that it doesn't need any adjusting. Yay! Then she looked at Albert's saddle and said it does not fit him anymore. The saddle Susan bought him in 2003 was made specially to be an extra-wide size, but now he is bigger than that. There isn't any way to make it wider, so he needs a new saddle. We tried Kaswyn's saddle on him and it fit, so the saddle

Quick update

Dressage Mom Archive on August 4, 2009, 11:49 am

Lots has been going on, but I don't have time for details. So here is the short version.Kaswyn has done wonderfully since the second mesotherapy treatment. We have our third treatment today, and it will probably be the last one he gets. Then we just take it nice and slow and get his strength back up.There was major drama over the weekend, specifically Saturday. First it looked like the whole trip to Nationals was off because of money problems for multiple people involved. Then Sunday we took all

Mesotherapy Treatment #2

Dressage Mom Archive on July 30, 2009, 4:34 pm

On Tuesday Dr. C was scheduled to come out and do a second mesotherpay treatment on Kaswyn. I had ridden Kaswyn once since the first mesotherpay treatment, and he was so much better that I decided to just lunge him until Dr. C could come out and evaluate him again. I was afraid that if his back was healing that I should stay off of it and let it heal, so I didn't ride even though I wanted to. On Tuesday I thought Dr. C would just come out and do the exam plus the therapy, so I lunged Kaswyn for

Better Backs R Us

Dressage Mom Archive on July 26, 2009, 11:38 pm

So I rode Kaswyn on Thursday (yeah I know it's Sunday, I'm just getting around to writing about it). I was scared to get on him but Dr. C told me to ride him so we could figure out if we were heading in the right direction with the mesotherapy. I checked Kaswyn's back before I put the saddle on and I could not get a pain reaction out of him. So we headed to the arena and I climbed on. And Kaswyn felt so much better. I would say he is 80% of where he should be. He still took a few funny steps but

Another vet visit? Yeah, I'm serious.

Dressage Mom Archive on July 22, 2009, 12:28 am

You think you're sick of hearing about Kaswyn's lameness troubles? Believe me, you're not as sick of that as I am about having the vet visits (or the bills, ugh). But I'm getting ahead of myself here.On Sunday after the show I went to the barn to ride Albert and Kaswyn. Unfortunately I had a bad ride on Kaswyn. He took another one of those steps where it feels like he stepped in a hole with one of his back legs, and he was off after that. I started thinking that it might be a suspensory ligament

July show - Sunday

Dressage Mom Archive on July 19, 2009, 7:28 pm

There's not much to tell about the show today, except that Skyy was wonderful. We lunged for 15 minutes before I got on to warm up for the first test, and he was a little tense and rushing on the lunge line. The warm up was good and then I asked my trainer to walk beside him halfway up the show ring. Obviously this strategy worked because he had a great test. His first test scored a 68% and a second place! His second ride of the day was an hour after the first one, I think he was a bit tired for this

July show - Saturday

Dressage Mom Archive on July 18, 2009, 8:47 pm

Friday night Skyy's owner brought him to the show grounds and I headed over there after work. It had been raining here on and off so the footing was wet and a little sloppy, but when I schooled Skyy in the warm-up arena he was really very good. We went to walk around the show arenas and he got very nervous and upset. I kept it together until we rode by someone setting up a merchant tent for a tack store. Skyy saw that white plastic tent material and heard velcro ripping and he stopped dead. I felt

Ptooey!

Dressage Mom Archive on July 16, 2009, 4:45 pm

While I managed to have a critter-free evening at the barn, I was not able to ride all three horses. The arena was so dusty that I stopped after two. I watered only one end a few days ago and because of the groundhog and never got to the other end. It's been hot so the footing is drying out very quickly and it was just too dusty. While I was riding Kaswyn I heard horses coughing in their stalls, so I decided it was time to quit. While I cleaned up I watered the whole arena so I won't be blowing
