by Julia, age 14 Thirty-three thousand roam the lands of the west. They gallop and frolic with their own lands to roam. Yet there are people who want to take them from their home; Rounding them up and selling the best, But the ones still too wild are put to their death. “There are too many!” The officials will say. “You’re killing them off!” The protesters will cry, “Let the beautiful creatures have room to fly!” The officials just argue, “That isn’t

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Fiala wandered along miserably. She ignored the birdsong and even the wildflowers. Afternoon came all too quickly. Ava abruptly lifted her nose and whinnied enthusiastically. A chorus of answers drifted back on the wind. “There they are!” Professor Neron squealed needlessly. The herd of Nightmares was grazing in a nearby meadow, their metallic black coats glittering like sculptures of black diamonds. Everything else forgotten, Ava turned her head back and forth

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Finally they reached the alpine meadows of the Kaialarnii mountains. Now it was only a matter of finding a herd of the Nightmares. Fiala tried to keep herself from being sad about the thought of saying goodbye to Ava, without success. She spent extra time brushing her every night, and braided her long mane and tail daily, only to pull it out again once they hit the road. “Look! Look!” the professor screeched, dancing excitedly by the side of the trail. Fiala

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Not really to Fiala’s surprise, Professor Neron proved to be extremely adept at storming up and down the rolling hills on their way to the Kaialarnii mountains, and talking all the way, at that. When he was lecturing about this plant or that, the way various elements of nature worked, how trees grew, or the life cycle of fish, Fiala paid attention. Soon he began on more boring subjects, such as the ancient history of Stargate, and Fiala allowed herself to slide

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 After a lengthy and heated discussion involving a lot of yelling between Jan and Professor Neron (who had a very large lung capacity, it seemed) it was decided that the best place to find a herd for Ava would be somewhere in the Kaialarnii mountains, which where only a two-days walk away, and that the Professor would accompany them, as well as his apprentices, Duncan and Maria. They would leave in two days. Duncan was wiry, brown haired and thin. His personality

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Fiala studied the professor carefully. He seemed to be nothing more than a cheerful old dotard, but she saw in the shrewd blue eyes keen intelligence, and heard the hidden sharpness in his voice. “We have one here in the city,” Jan muttered, staring at his tea cup suspiciously. “Ah!” the old professor beamed. “Would you mind if we went to see it now?” “We—” Gareth began. “Her name is Ava,” Fiala interrupted. “Yes, of course,” said Professor

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 The next morning, their trip to the academy began. The innkeeper was all too happy to tell them of it’s location, and the five of them were soon on their way. They left Ava at the stables for safety’s sake. The Academy of Lilika was in the center of Stargate. It was huge, even in comparison to Stargate’s walls. Beautiful statues adorned the walls, ancient trees grew in abundance in the gardens. A fountain greeted visitors by the doorway. The Academy

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 The cream-colored stones making up the wall were of an impossible size; gigantic squares that must have been the size of a small house, and weighing who knew how much. The wall was so high the people standing on the top seemed to Fiala’s eyes to be miniscule dolls. Even though she was standing on the top of a hill, she couldn’t see over the wall. An intricate gold-coated gate inhabited a space in the wall; stone to it’s left, it’s right, and

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Fiala rose the next morning to the sound of talking. The men were sitting around a campfire cooking breakfast. She studied the party. There was Jan; glowering as usual. She supposed he liked his bed better than the ground. Then there was Evan; stocky with white-blond hair and blue eyes; the clown of the village. He was the blacksmith’s son. Gareth was quiet and hard-working; the farrier of the village. Brown hair and hazel eyes suited his sensible, good-natured

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 The five of them marched out of the village in the still of pre-dawn. They had decided the less people knew about Ava the better. Fiala had quickly corrected the others on the Nightmare’s identity, to much rolling of eyes on the part of the men. “Just ignore them, Ava. They’re all like that. Don’t take it personally,” Fiala advised. Ava simply snuffled her shoulder to see if there were any treats to be found and ignored Fiala’s wisdom. Fiala’s

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Melora ushered Fiala up to their rooms as soon as the Nightmare was back in her stall. Together they packed some good, tough clothes for travel, warm clothes for nighttime, an extra pair of boots and a cloak, plus some extra snacks, both for Fiala and the Nightmare. “She needs a name, Melora,” Fiala mused. “What should we name her?” They contemplated this as they folded all the clothes tightly for space efficiency. “What about Ava?” Melora suggested. by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Only fourteen people were sitting around the table, Enya among them. Melora went to sit beside Jan, but Fiala stayed with the Nightmare, unsure. The Nightmare studied the table then turned her head to the house. She breathed in deeply and lowered her muzzle to graze. Well at least she’s an herbivore, Fiala thought. She scratched the Nightmare’s withers and looked down. The villagers around the table were muttering in low voices. Jan stood up. “Enya,

Come and see her!” Fiala blurted. “She needs to be brushed and—” “Is it dangerous?” Melora interrupted. “No she’s not!” Fiala assured her. She changed tactics and began acting exactly as a little sister should. “Please, Melora!” she begged.

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Fiala shrugged. She’d worry about that later. There was a knock on the door. “Come in,” Enya called. Jan Jaegger stomped in, black hair mussed from working in the fields. He squinted in the gloom, then swore loudly. The Nightmare jumped and turned her head anxiously. “I think you should call a village meeting,” Enya stated. “And don’t let the stupid ones come.” A smile twitched around Jan’s mouth. “It would be a small meeting, then.” “All

Listen closely I don’t like repeating myself,” said Enya. “The Nighmares are what fly over sleeping people at night, sending bad dreams. They don’t mean to, it’s just what happens. And they only pass on bad dreams when they are flying over top of the house and when the moon isn’t shining. If the moon’s out, nothing happens.

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Enya lived by herself in a small, decrepid hut at the edge of the village. She was rather strange and, although no longer young, got along by herself very well. Some said that she had lived with the faeries before she came to the village, others said she was a witch, and Fiala was rather intimidated by her. Careful to keep the horse-thing out of Enya’s precious garden, Fiala stepped up to the door and knocked. Almost immediately the door was opened by a petite,

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 After some deliberation, Fiala placed her hand on it’s neck and led it though the village, keeping a wary eye on it for any unexpected move it might make. The horse-thing raised its wings in alarm as a horse bugled at the inn’s hitching post. Fiala patted the thing’s neck reassuringly and kept walking. The creature was always stopping to look around; she supposed it had never been in a village before, and their progress was slow. Eventually they

It was as if she had been pulled from a snow bank, only snow banks generally weren’t blue-black and generally didn’t have demons and other creatures writhing inside them. The horse’s eye returned to normal. She jumped to her feet and backed away, but the thing followed her, head lowered, and tucked its wings to its sides. She cursed silently as the wind changed direction. Catching her smell, the horse-thing clambered to its feet, staring at the trees. It couldn’t see her, but it obviously knew she was there. It worked its mouth uneasily. Fiala recoiled. It’s teeth were sharp. The horse lowered and raised its head, like the horses

Nightmare: Chapter 1

by Findabhair Blacksgote, age 14 Fiala Jaeggar narrowed her eyes and turned her face to the wind. She was high in an alpine meadow, full of wild flowers. The breeze picked up her tresses of dark brown curls, begging them to come fly with the wind. Fiala shaded her eyes with both hands and peered across to the next field, listening to the birds singing. A shiny blue-black thing had alighted in the far meadow. It was far too big for a bird, and no bird Fiala had heard of was metallic black. She hesitated.
